The 851E is a preamplifier that takes a source signal and passes it on to a power amplifier stage with as little alteration as possible. A solid-state volume control keeps the signal precise at low listening levels. Quoted figures include THD below 0.00045% at 1kHz and a frequency response of 10Hz to 100kHz within ±0.1dB.
Output is available as unbalanced (8V RMS) or balanced (8V + 8V RMS), each with a 100 ohm output impedance. A subwoofer output can be set to flat or to a 200Hz second-order Butterworth low-pass filter. Shelving-type bass and treble controls give up to ±10dB at 10Hz and ±7.5dB at 20kHz.
The unit comes with a remote control and three AAA batteries, and an orange control bus cable for linking it to other components. It is finished in black and silver, weighs 8.1kg and measures 115 x 430 x 385mm. Maximum power consumption is 36W, falling to under 0.5W in standby.
