The Bit Commander turns a single instrument into a stack of square-wave synth voices. It tracks monophonic lines and bends, and the voices are mixed with simple level controls rather than envelope or oscillator settings. Available voices are a squared version of the input (Base), a sub-octave two octaves down (Sub), one octave down (Down 1) and one octave up (Up 1), the last of which uses a transformer-based circuit.
Six knobs cover the whole interface: Level for master volume, Filter for tone (brighter clockwise, warmer counterclockwise), and the Base, Sub, Down 1 and Up 1 level controls. Suggested settings are provided for bass-synth style sounds, following riffs with a neck pickup, and extreme ring-modulator-like tones. It can also be used with bass, keyboards and drum sources, and a loop pedal can be used to build bass synth riffs.
The pedal is true bypass with electronic relay-based switching, so audio does not pass when power is off. It runs from a standard 9 V DC supply with a 2.1 mm negative-center barrel and draws 25 mA. The maker recommends transformer-isolated, pedal-specific power supplies and warns against higher voltages. It is built by hand in Akron, Ohio and carries a limited lifetime warranty.
