The SM81 is a unidirectional condenser instrument microphone with a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and a flat curve intended for accurate reproduction of the source. Its cardioid pattern stays uniform with frequency and symmetric about the axis, which keeps off-axis sound rejected with little coloration. It combines low noise, a high output clipping level and low distortion over a wide range of load impedances.
For tone and level control it offers a selectable low-frequency response (flat, 6 dB/octave or 18 dB/octave rolloff) and a 0 dB/10 dB attenuator switch that can be locked in place. Low RF susceptibility helps in busy environments, and the steel construction is built to work across a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions.
The microphone runs on phantom power (12 to 48 Vdc, DIN 45 596). A swivel adapter, attenuator-switch lock and foam windscreen are supplied, and the listing mentions a carrying and storage case. Further accessories such as shock mounts, stereo adapters and clips are available separately.
