The 424mkIII is a four-track cassette PortaStudio that combines a recorder and a mixer in one unit. It has six channel strips plus a stereo input, and each channel carries a three-band EQ whose mid band can be swept across frequencies to target a specific part of the sound.
Four XLR microphone preamps let microphones connect directly, with no XLR-to-1/4" adapters or transformers. Two independent effect sends make it possible to feed two separate effects from the same channel. Tape handling is helped by an electronic transport, and dbx noise reduction reduces tape hiss. Two tape speeds are offered: a high speed of 3 3/4 ips and a normal speed of 1 7/8 ips.
For connections, each track has its own output, and there is a separate input and output pair for a mixdown deck, which also serves for monitoring. An optional RC-30P pedal adds punch-in control. The maker lists this model as discontinued.
