The D1 is an external 32-bit DAC and headphone amplifier meant to replace a computer's built-in sound card. It takes digital audio over USB-C or optical (TOSLINK/SPDIF), converts it with an ESS9018 chip and sends it to a front headphone output and a pair of stereo RCA outputs for powered speakers or an AV receiver.
The headphone stage is based on an ES9601C SABRE low-noise op-amp. The maker suggests headphones between 20 and 300 ohms as the best match, and reports that some users run 600 ohm models. A front volume control sets the level, and volume can also be adjusted from the computer. Optical input is a fixed output, so a TV remote cannot change the level. The case is aluminium and the RCA connectors are audiophile-grade.
The unit is powered over USB, so no external supply is needed. It works with macOS, Windows and iOS without drivers or apps; on a Mac the D1 is selected in the Sound settings. Android 5.0 or later can be used through a USB OTG cable. A USB cable is included.
