The WH-1000XM4 is a wireless over-ear headphone with active noise cancelling. Two microphones on each earcup feed ambient noise to the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1, which works with a Bluetooth audio SoC to adjust cancelling more than 700 times per second. Ambient Sound Control and Adaptive Sound Control let wearers pass through voices or announcements, and the headphones learn frequently visited locations to adapt settings.
Sound comes from 40mm drivers with Liquid Crystal Polymer diaphragms, driven by a built-in analogue amplifier. The headphones support High-Resolution Audio over Bluetooth via LDAC, and DSEE Extreme uses on-device AI to upscale compressed music files. They are certified for 360 Reality Audio and can be personalised for BRAVIA TVs through a companion app. A proximity sensor and two acceleration sensors detect whether the headphones are worn and adjust playback to save power.
Connection is by Bluetooth or NFC, with Google Fast Pair support, and a supplied cable allows wired listening. Battery life is up to 30 hours, with quick charging via an optional AC adapter. The earcups swivel to fold into the supplied carry case. Settings and the equaliser are managed in the Sony | Sound Connect app.
