DS-D98
Tape-based Super Audio CD–oriented recorder from Tascam, built for DSD 2-track recording and PCM multitrack work. It targets studios producing SACD masters or multitrack sessions that need sample-accurate sync between machines. The model has been discontinued.

The DS-D98 works in two modes: DSD two-track recording, developed together with Sony for Super Audio CD creation, and PCM multitrack recording. It is described as the only tape-based machine able to record DSD. In PCM mode the recording format is selectable between 24-bit and 16-bit, and the track count depends on sampling frequency: 8 tracks at 44.1/48 kHz, 4 tracks at 88.2/96 kHz and 2 tracks at 176.4/192 kHz.
Operating features include pitch control of +/- 6%, a built-in test tone generator, an electronic patchbay, confidence monitoring, selectable reference levels and a front-panel LCD. Set-up data can be stored on the tape, punch in/out is seamless with a digital cross fade, and the level meter has an adjustable peak hold release time.
For connection and synchronisation, the recorder provides Sony SDIF-3, TDIF-1 and 8-channel AES/EBU digital I/O as standard. Control is via RS-422 (P2 protocol), and an XLR time-code I/O with an onboard SMPTE synchronizer and Word Sync In/Out/Thru are fitted. Up to 16 machines can be synchronised with sample accuracy.
